Strengthening Neighborhoods & Families
We recognize that poverty is a complicated and multi-faceted problem. We also believe in the need for significant changes in the systems and structures — laws, behaviors, attitudes, policies and institutions — that make a difference to people and their communities. To this end, the Strengthening Neighborhoods & Families Program includes initiatives that assist community members in overcoming tough barriers by providing concrete assistance like access to employment and workforce training.
Grassroots Grants
We provide modest grant funding for groups of community members that design initiatives for the betterment of their neighborhoods. We also teach them about the grantmaking process, how to document their use of grant funding, and how to use that knowledge for future resident-led projects.
Resident Leader Initiative
Resident Leaders and Community Capacity Building Initiative in partnership with the United Way Forsyth County - Winston Salem (Place Matters) is a continuation of the Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods (NBN) partnership with United Way to develop grassroots organizing and resident-led initiatives.
Community Investment
Initiatives to address the Social Determinants of Health Cure Violence Model Implementation: NBN's initiative focused on adopting the Cure Violence model to prevent community violence, provide conflict mediation, and offer alternatives to violence, creating safer neighborhoods.

The Resident Health Connector
The Resident Health Connector Initiative is an innovative initiative designed to improve community health by leveraging the power of connection and local knowledge. This initiative positions residents as Health Connectors, who act as bridges between their community and health resources.
